Nick Dametto is set to become the new mayor of Townsville.
The former KAP MP has declared victory in the mayoral race – with News Corp also projecting him the winner.
Mr Dametto had 60 per-cent of the vote as of midday yesterday – a big lead but it is worth noting the AEC is still counting.
The incoming mayor saying he wants people to be proud of their city and council should be proud of the work they do too.
Premier David Crisafulli congratulated Mr Dametto on Sunday morning saying “this result will give this proud city the local leadership it needs and deserves.”
“Congratulations Nick – our Government looks forward to working with you to deliver better outcomes for a great city,” Mr Crisafulli said.
Fellow candidate Joanne Keune wished the new mayor well too saying she “wish[es] him well in leading our wonderful city.”
Former mayor Troy Thompson also bowed out with this – saying being the mayor “was one of the greatest honours of his life.”
“Although the journey was shorter than most, its impact on me was profound. Every day in this role reaffirmed why I love this city and its people — because everything I do has always come from the ground up, from being out in our community, listening, learning and standing side-by-side with you,” Mr Thompson said
