NQ roads cut off after weekend of heavy rain

A severe weather warning for heavy rain has been issued, stretching from the Lower-Burdekin to South of Mackay.

225mm of rain has fallen at Rita Island since 9am yesterday and 121mm has been recorded at Alva Beach.

North Ward, South Townsville, Picnic Bay, Rollingstone and Toolakea all recorded more than 200mm between 9am Saturday and 9am Sunday.

Meanwhile, motorists have been left stranded as flooding cuts the Bruce Highway to the north and south of Bowen, with some people opting to sleep in their cars.

About 20 roads across Townsville remain closed this morning.

Bowen PCYC has been opened as place of refuge for stranded motorists.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting more falls today, with a severe weather warning in place.

Forecaster Vikash Prasad says what to expect in the coming days.

“Tuesday night, we do expect this low-pressure system to be very close to the coast and as a result the whole Central Coast and even the southern part of the Herbert and Lower-Burdekin are likely to see some further rainfall totals mostly between 100-150mm,” he says.

“The rainfall is likely to ease from tomorrow night as the low-pressure system moves away.

“By Wednesday, we do expect the rain to clear.”
