15 more state schools across Townsville and surrounding areas will re-open , taking the total number re-opened following the flooding emergency to 55.

The state schools to re-open are: Bluewater, Currajong, Gumlu, Heatley, Heatley Secondary, Jarvisfield, Kirwan, Kirwan High, Mundingburra, Northern Beaches High, Railway Estate, The Willows, Thuringowa High, Vincent and William Ross High.

“This is not only great news for the students and teachers of these schools, but for the wider community as well,” Minister for Communities Coralee O’Rourke said.

“To have all of these state schools cleaned and certified as safe to operate in such a short space of time is testament to the spirit, resilience and determination of the North.”

This leaves just six schools to be re-opened, five of which will be opened by the end of the week.

Education Minister Grace Grace said the Education Department had established a dedicated webpage which outlined a proposed timetable for the re-opening of state schools, as well as important information about the funding assistance program that is available for students, parents, teachers and other school staff.

The website can be found at

Ms Grace said approximately 22,000 parents and caregivers of state school students impacted by the floods would be able to apply for this funding assistance.

“People need to be able to return to set routines and a sense of normality but for many, they will need a helping hand to do that,” she said.

She said teachers, other school staff and families could apply for funding assistance to replace learning essentials.

“We want to make this process as easy as possible for teachers, other school staff and families.”

Parents requiring further information should visit the website or contact the Department of Education on 1800 916 770.

Ms Grace said her Department was continuing to work with individual schools and other Government agencies to ensure as many schools as possible can progressively re-open this week.
