Clive Palmer's United Australia Party may not have secured any Senate seats but he is calling for Penny Wong to resign.

He said Senator Penny Wong should follow Bill Shorten’s lead and resign following the Labor party’s comprehensive federal election defeat.

“Penny Wong has failed to take any responsibility for the failure of the ALP at the federal election.

“She harbours views of moving to the lower house and putting her hand up for leadership, but she should do the honourable thing like Bill Shorten and step down,’’ Mr Palmer said.

Mr Palmer said the Australian people had spoken very clearly about the ALP.

“They don’t want to be taxed into oblivion. The country needs productivity not increased taxes, stagnant wages and no economic stimulus,’’ he said.

“Penny Wong should fall on her sword instead of staging a coup.”

Penny Wong's office has been contacted for comment.
