Dog owners are being urged to avoid Rowes Bay and Pallarenda Dog Beach, after a toxic warning has been issued following the tragic death of three dogs in the past fortnight.

Veterinary experts at NQ Care believe the dogs say the dogs suffered acute liver and kidney failure, and blood tests revealed signs consistent with aflatoxin poisoning — a toxin found in moldy vegetation, rotting plant matter and old coconuts.

NQ Care says the deaths are linked to coconut debris scattered along the beach and are urging pet owners to supervise dogs closely.

Townsville City Council is now investigating the incident and will update the public soon. In the meantime, pet owners are being warned to seek urgent vet care if their dog shows any signs of illness after visiting the beach and avoid the area.

Taleta Hompas, Managing Director of NQ Care says some of the early symptoms to look out for include lethargy, change in appetite as well as vomiting and diarrhea.
