Anti-theft screws will be free for Townsville residents at Bunnings, Domain Central.
Police have teamed up with the hardware store to give away the one-way-screws between 9am and 3pm on Sunday, February 12.
The screws will help reduce number plate theft in the community due to the difficulty of removing them.
Officers say the stolen plates can be used in further crimes like fuel drive offs, break and enters, traffic offences and armed robberies.
Screws can be installed with an ordinary flat head screwdriver, but only removed with a specific tool.
