Measles outbreak declared in Cairns, case detected in Townsville

Health officials have declared a measles outbreak in Cairns following the confirmation of a second case in the city. The latest case indicates local transmission, after an initial infection was detected late last week in the city centre.

Queensland Health’s has also confirmed a case with exposure sites across Townsville – including The Strand, Cotters Markets and Castletown Coles.

The virus is highly contagious and can take up to three weeks to show symptoms.

Other potential exposure sites included freelance roasting, little sunshine and co, chemist warehouse in the CBD and Lighten up Studio

Look out for fever, cough, red eyes and a blotchy rash. Anyone feeling unwell should call their doctor or 13HEALTH — and stay away from public spaces.
