A police initiative is ongoing in Townsville aiming to reduce traffic crashes and the effects of road trauma.

Since Operation Whiskey Nali began more than 2,800 roadside breath tests and drug tests have been conducted, resulting in 19 drug drivers and four drink drivers charged.

This targeted four-month initiative commenced in March and will run until end of June 2024.

Inspector Damien Crosby says the operation includes a high police presence in Garbutt.

“Garbutt has one of the highest number of traffic crashes in Townsville.

“Our focus is on road safety and reducing road trauma in Townsville as we collectively work towards reducing serious road injuries and fatalities on our road networks.

“This initiative aims to reduce the number of traffic crashes and change driver behaviour through education, engagement and enforcement.

“Since the commencement of the initiative, more than 2,800 roadside breath tests and drug tests have been conducted, resulting in 19 drug drivers and four drink drivers charged. Police have also issued 161 traffic infringements.

“There is no excuse for speeding or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” Inspector Crosby says.

The initiative also provides a direct opportunity for police to engage with the community.

370 drivers have participated in a road safety survey developed by Townsville Forensic Crash Unit Senior Constable Hayley Garrod (through a QR Code provided to all drivers and roadside engagement).

Drivers have provided valuable feedback on the issues they are most concerned about, which includes driver education, enforcement and improved knowledge in negotiating roundabouts.

Townsville Forensic Crash Unit Senior Constable Hayley Garrod says drivers are responsible for the decisions they make behind the wheel.

“By making poor decisions when getting behind the wheel, you are not only putting yourself at risk of death or serious injury, but your passengers, other road users and pedestrians.”

Police will be using this community feedback platform to make Garbutt and Townsville a safer place for all road users.
