Road trauma is now the second leading cause of death for young Queenslanders aged 15 to 24, with new RACQ data highlighting the devastating toll on families and communities.

Between 2019 and 2024, 295 young adults lost their lives on Queensland roads, and at least 31 more have already been killed this year, including a 21-year-old motorcyclist from Kirwan last month.

RACQ’s Head of Public Policy, Dr Michael Kane, says the numbers are unacceptable and urgent action is needed. He said the first 6 to 12 months on P-plates is the most dangerous period for young drivers, and more must be done to address the cultural crisis behind the wheel.

RACQ’s latest Road Safety Survey revealed many young drivers are still engaging in risky behaviour, with a significant number admitting to speeding, drink driving, using mobile phones while driving, not wearing seatbelts and driving while fatigued.
