A reminder to members of the public to not engage in what’s been described as ‘foolish’ behaviour around crocodiles.

The warning comes from the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI) after they had to remove a small crocodile from Garbutt Park at Ingham after it had been fed.

Wildlife Officer Ella Meeve says DESI received a report of a one-metre crocodile in the park from a member of the public.

“We conducted a site assessment and observed the animal on the bank near a park bench.

“Unfortunately, we also observed discarded food in the park, and the crocodile’s behaviour indicated that it had been fed.

“As a result of being fed, the crocodile had become habituated and was deemed to be a risk to public safety.

“Although the crocodile measured only one metre in length, feeding crocodiles is extremely foolish as it places the public in danger.

“The crocodile was transported directly to a licensed farm.”

People in the Croc Country are urged to report all crocodile sightings in a timely manner, and wildlife officers investigate every sighting report.

Crocodile sightings can be reported to DES by using the QWildlife app, submitting a sighting report via the DES website, or by calling 1300 130 372.
