Surf Life Saving Queensland has installed two new smart safety beacons and camera poles at Pallarenda Beach and Picnic Bay, as part of its expanding Coastal Safety Network.

Installed in early 2026, these are the first two of eight smart poles planned for across the state, marking a significant step forward in enhancing public safety along Queensland’s coastline.

The innovative devices are equipped with built-in help points that allow members of the public to directly contact SLSQ’s State Operations Centre in an emergency.

Live video feeds from the poles are also streamed to the centre, enabling operators to assess incidents in real time and coordinate a faster, more effective response.

In addition, the smart poles feature public announcement systems, allowing lifesavers and lifeguards to communicate warnings and safety messages to beachgoers remotely.

Designed for the harsh coastal environment, the poles operate entirely off-grid using solar power and are built to withstand extreme weather conditions.

Each site also includes Public Rescue Equipment (PRE), empowering bystanders to assist in emergencies while professional help is on the way.

The project highlights the strong collaboration between SLSQ and Townsville City Council in delivering innovative safety solutions for the community and visitors alike.
