Townsville has officially welcomed a new Deputy Mayor, with Division Six Councillor and Olympian Suzy Batkovic voted into the role during a Special Council meeting last week.
The appointment follows Division Three Councillor Ann‑Maree Greaney stepping down after serving a 12‑month tenure as Deputy Mayor.
Mayor Nick Dametto praised Cr Batkovic’s leadership and commitment, saying she has proven herself both in the community and in the council chamber.
“Throughout the last five years Councillor Batkovic has cemented herself as a strong leader both within the community and in the chamber, and I look forward to working with her by my side as Deputy Mayor,” Cr Dametto said.
He highlighted her strong moral fibre, work ethic, and history as captain of the Townsville Fire basketball team, noting her ability to advocate not only for her division but for the city as a whole.
Cr Batkovic said she was honoured to be nominated and grateful for the unanimous support of her fellow councillors.
“I am proud that we have strong leadership, and a committed group of councillors, who are ready to get this city back on track,” she said. “I am honoured to serve as Deputy Mayor and look forward to working in support of the Mayor, as well as collaboratively with all councillors, for the betterment of our community.”
Her appointment marks a new chapter for Townsville’s leadership team, with council emphasising its focus on pride, prosperity, and strong representation for residents.
