Townsville is stepping up its fight against “forever chemicals”, with the Townsville Laboratory Service expanding its PFAS testing capabilities to cover soils, sediments and solid wastes, on top of its existing water and wastewater accreditation.
The upgrade strengthens environmental monitoring across North Queensland and positions Townsville as a leader in PFAS analysis — a growing global concern due to the chemicals’ persistence in the environment.
Mayor Nick Dametto says the expansion is a major win for the community, allowing high‑demand testing to be done locally rather than relying on interstate labs, with revenue reinvested back into Townsville services and infrastructure.
Experts say the boosted capability will support researchers, industry and councils across the region, delivering faster, high‑quality testing and improving the management of environmental contaminants. The lab’s work also deepens collaboration with universities, including James Cook University, which says access to accredited PFAS testing in Townsville is a significant advantage for northern research.
