Police have arrested eight teenagers and two adults following frightening incident in Garbutt after a car was allegedly stolen from a driveway with a two‑month‑old baby strapped into the back seat.
The black Isuzu D‑Max was taken from a home on Sunderland Street around 1.44pm yesterday while the child’s mother was standing nearby. According to police, unknown offenders jumped into the parked vehicle and drove off before stopping a short distance down the road.
The offenders then briefly returned and allegedly placed the baby — still secured in their car seat — on the footpath, before fleeing again in the ute.
Paramedics assessed the infant as a precaution, and thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Police have confirmed they have tracked down the black Isuzu D‑Ma with the assistance of POLAIR. The Isuzu was located at a carpark on Charters Towers Road around 9.45pm, alongside a white Ford Ranger that was on fire and was reported stolen from a Railway Estate address on June 14.
The baby’s mother, Sarah, told Seven News the ordeal left her shaken, saying her “soul left her body” when she realised her child had been taken.
Police say presently ten offenders have been charged on 19 offences unrelated to the Garbutt incident.

A 21-year-old Rasmussen woman was charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
She is expected to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court today, 16 June.
A 18-year-old Deeragun man was charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and disqualified driving.
He is expected to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court today, 16 June.
A 17-year-old girl has been charged with one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
