The upcoming release of EA SPORTS FC 27 looks to have some of the biggest changes to the franchise in as long as I can recall delivering some of its most ambitious pivots yet.’The Grounds’ is a massive, evolving social hub designed to turn the traditional football experience into a 100-player shared community.
It is a bold departure from standard menus and matchmaking screens. But does a sprawling online metropolis actually belong in a football game, or is it just extra noise? Let us take a look at what we know about this shift in what FC 27 is bringing to the pitch.
Welcome to Your New Clubhouse
At the core of FC 27’s new social experience is The Grounds. This is not just a lobby; it is a shared, interactive world where up to 100 players can hang out, form Clubs, and compete. The world is built around a central hub called The Terrace, which branches off into three distinct districts inspired by global football cultures. You have Montclair, which channels the urban cage-pitch energy of France; Zeiza, highlighting the classic street football spirit of Argentina; and Parkside, which pays tribute to the working-class football heritage of the UK.
For long-time fans of the series, there is also a major narrative surprise hidden in this new mode: Alex Hunter is back. The protagonist from the beloved ‘The Journey’ mode returns as a Mentor, alongside real-world stars like Kylian Mbappe, Chloe Kelly, and Paulo Dybala. These mentors serve as guides, directing you toward challenges that fit their specific footballing philosophies.
How It Works
The sheer volume of activities crammed into The Grounds is staggering. Standard 11v11 Club Leagues and Playoffs return, but they now exist seamlessly within this physical space. You can walk straight into your customised Clubhouse to join a match, or dive into Live Tournaments that feature wild modifiers like Mystery Ball or ‘No Rules’.
However, where FC 27 really shakes things up is with ‘Kickabouts’. These are essentially arcade-style mini-games that blend football with other sports. ‘Balloon Ball’ tasks four players with protecting balloons attached to their heads by kicking footballs at each other. ‘Bocce Ball’ is a target-smashing accuracy challenge. ‘Bucket Ball’ introduces a bizarre but intriguing 2v2 basketball hybrid where you score via precision lob passes and aerial spikes.
EA has finally listened to community feedback regarding player progression. In previous years, customising your player’s Archetype (their specific build and skill set) was costly and restrictive. In FC 27, all Archetypes are unlocked by default right from the start. Better yet, resetting your stats to try a different build no longer costs in-game Coins, and you can fine-tune individual attributes on the fly without having to scrap your entire character. This level of freedom is a massive win for player experimentation.
The introduction of ‘Amps’ which are temporary buffs you equip before a match, such as standard attribute boosts or ‘Signature Amps’ that grant special PlayStyles. Hopefully having to constantly manage expiring temporary boosts, combined with multiple tiers of consumable items used to speed up experience points in the pre-match preparation won’t make it feel too much like a spreadsheet. We’ll be looking closely at this when the game launches.
Are we excited?
Despite some concerns about the heavy integration of consumable items, EA SPORTS FC 27 is undeniably highly anticipated. The shift from static menus to a living, breathing virtual playground breathes fresh air into the Pro Clubs formula, and the return of Alex Hunter is sure to win over nostalgic fans.
EA SPORTS FC 27 will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
