A 42‑year‑old woman has died inside the Townsville Women’s Correctional Centre after being found unresponsive in her cell early Sunday morning.
Queensland Corrective Services confirmed custodial officers located the prisoner around 7am before attempting to revive her. Despite their efforts, she could not be saved.
Authorities say the death is being treated as non‑suspicious, and a report is now being prepared for the coroner, which is standard procedure for all deaths in custody.
A QCS spokesperson said support is being offered to the officers who responded, and the woman’s next of kin have been notified.
Her death adds to ongoing scrutiny around conditions and health outcomes in Queensland’s correctional facilities, with coronial investigations expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
