North Queensland is set to become a launchpad for future Olympians, with the Queensland Academy of Sport opening its first Regional Hub in Townsville.
The 12‑month pilot program will support up to 30 emerging athletes, giving them access to world‑class high‑performance services at the Townsville Sport Precinct — including strength and conditioning, coaching, performance support and a dedicated high‑performance gym.
The Crisafulli Government says the hub will strengthen the region’s athlete pipeline ahead of Brisbane 2032, reducing the need for talented North Queensland athletes to travel south for elite support and helping them stay connected to their home community while they develop.
QAS leaders say the Townsville hub will play a key role in identifying and supporting regional talent earlier, building coaching capability and ensuring North Queensland athletes have the tools they need to progress toward elite competition.
