The North Queensland Cowboys have pulled off a major recruitment coup, signing Cronulla stars Jesse Ramien and Sione Katoa on two‑year deals from 2027 — a move that all but confirms the departure of fan favourite Murray Taulagi.
The Sharks duo, who have played more than 100 games together on Cronulla’s right edge, will join the Cowboys through to the end of 2028. Their arrival brings strike power, experience and stability to a backline already stacked with emerging talent including Tom Chester, Jaxon Purdue and James Walsh.
But the signings come with a cost. Taulagi, off‑contract at season’s end, has been linked to the Roosters and is expected to leave Townsville after stalling on a new two‑year offer from the Cowboys. Coach Todd Payten recently confirmed the club had “done everything possible” to retain him.
Recruitment boss Clint Zammit says Ramien and Katoa significantly strengthen the club’s depth.
“The signings of Jesse and Sione significantly upgrades the level of depth in our backline,” Cowboys Recruitment Manager Clint Zammit said.
“They join Tom Chester, Braidon Burns, Rob Derby, Jaxon Purdue and James Walsh in being signed until at least the end of 2028, which creates great stability in the backline for our club.
“Jesse has been in the top echelon of centres in the NRL for the better part of a decade. He’s experienced, can break tackles and is a strong defender.
“Sione is a wonderful finisher and carries the ball strongly out of his own end.”
