A name change for a national Park on Magnetic Island is being proposed.

The Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI) is recognising the connection to Country for the Wulgurukaba Traditional Owners of Magnetic Island National Park, by proposing to rename the protected estate to Yunbenun National Park.

This proposal relates to the national park only, not the name of the island itself.

Yunbenun is the preferred name for the island by the Wulgurukaba people, who have lived there and on the nearby mainland for thousands of years.

The island and surrounding waters’ natural values are of great cultural significance to the Wulgurukaba People, and continue to be important sources of food, medicines and material resources.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) works closely with Wulgurukaba to care for this environmentally and culturally significant Country.

DESI has recently unveiled an updated management statement for the national park, which outlines strategic directions for conserving key natural social and cultural values of the World Heritage Area.

This includes Wulgurukaba cultural sites and places as well as the heritage listed World War II fort complex, significant vine thickets and the iconic hoop pine of Magnetic Island.

The management statement has been co-designed with the Wulgurukaba People and outlines a shared strategic vision for looking after the park.
