A 25‑year‑old man from Garbutt has been charged after a police officer was struck by a stolen car during a chaotic incident in South Mackay on Sunday.

Police were called to a Paradise Street address around 10am after reports a stolen white Toyota Rav4 was parked at the property. When officers arrived, the driver allegedly reversed at speed, hitting two police vehicles.

A male constable who had stepped out of his car to arrest the driver was struck by the Rav4. He suffered a foot injury and was taken to hospital.

The stolen vehicle was later seen driving through suburbs south of Mackay before crashing on the Mackay Ring Road at 10.20am. The driver fled on foot but was arrested the following morning.

Police say the Rav4 had been stolen hours earlier from a home on Lindeman Avenue in Cranbrook, Townsville.

The 25‑year‑old is now facing a long list of charges, including entering dwellings with intent, endangering a police officer while driving, unlawful possession of a category H weapon, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and possessing property suspected of being the proceeds of crime. He is due to appear in the Mackay Magistrates Court on May 26.

A 20‑year‑old woman was also arrested at the Paradise Street scene on May 24 and charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle. Her bail was refused, and she was due to appear in court on May 25.

Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
