Queensland is no longer the nation’s car theft capital, with new data revealing the largest fall in stolen vehicle insurance claims ever recorded. Victoria has taken the title after Queensland saw a 12 per cent drop in motor theft claims in just one year, a shift the Crisafulli Government says reflects its push to restore safety across Queensland communities.

According to new analysis from the Insurance Council of Australia, stolen car claims fell from 6,900 in 2024 to 6,100 in 2025, saving Queenslanders more than $12 million in insurance costs.

The Government says its strategy of more police, stronger laws, early intervention and rehabilitation is beginning to show results. Queensland Police data also shows a 3.2 per cent drop in the number of victims of stolen cars from 2024 to 2025.

“These are positive early positive early results, but we aren’t taking our foot off the pedal because we know there is so much more work to be done,” Premier Crisafulli said.

“We will continue to deliver more police, stronger laws and effective early intervention and rehabilitation to turn the tide on the Youth Crime Crisis we inherited as a result of a decade of weak laws.”

The Premier did acknowledge the work is far from over, however. There have been 540 cars reported stolen in Townsville so far this year.
